How Shiori works

A closer look at the learning experience your students will have, and the tools your teachers gain.

Personalised stories, not flashcards

Each student receives AI-generated readings tailored to their proficiency level, their interests, and the vocabulary they need to practise. Target kanji and words appear naturally within stories about topics the student has chosen, such as business, travel, daily life, or Japanese culture.

While reading, students can tap any word to see its meaning, reading, and usage notes. Furigana and kana support adjust automatically based on proficiency, so beginners get the scaffolding they need and advanced students get challenged.

This is contextual learning: encountering words the way they naturally appear in real Japanese, embedded in meaningful sentences rather than isolated on flashcards.

Spaced repetition that runs itself

Shiori’s spaced repetition engine works across two channels simultaneously. Words are scheduled for direct review at optimal intervals based on each student’s performance history. But they also reappear naturally inside future reading passages, creating additional exposure without feeling like a drill.

Words that a student consistently struggles with surface more often in both channels. Words that have been mastered gradually space out. The entire system runs automatically. Students do not need to manage decks, set schedules, or make any decisions about what to study next.

Every student has a different threshold for how much new information they can absorb in a single session. Shiori monitors performance in real time and adjusts accordingly.

For students who are struggling, the system adds more support: simpler sentence structures, more furigana, fewer new vocabulary items per reading. For students who are progressing well, support decreases and complexity increases. This keeps every session in the productive zone, reducing frustration for weaker students and preventing boredom for stronger ones.

Difficulty that adjusts in real time

See exactly where each student stands

Shiori provides teachers with a clear, real-time dashboard showing each student’s learning progress. At a glance, teachers can see vocabulary mastery rates, reading activity, session frequency, and which students may need additional attention.

For each student, teachers can review which kanji and vocabulary have been mastered, which are currently being learned, and which are persistently difficult. This data supports more targeted classroom instruction and enables early intervention when students fall behind.

Progress data is presented simply and clearly. No training is required to read the dashboard, and reports can be exported for parent meetings or institutional reporting.

Works alongside your existing curriculum

Shiori is designed to complement the textbooks and materials your school already uses, including Minna no Nihongo, Dekiru Nihongo, Marugoto, and other standard curricula. Vocabulary from your class lessons can be targeted for reinforcement through Shiori’s reading exercises.

No curriculum changes are needed. Shiori adds a layer of personalised, science-backed practice on top of your existing teaching, not instead of it.
